Two men have been arrested for attempting to obtain a ransom of Rs. 700,000 from a female resident of Wellawatte.
The Police said the 33-year-old woman had been involved in an affair via social media, two years ago, with a resident of Jaffna who is currently residing in England.
However, following the end of the relationship, the man had threatened to publish intimate pictures of them on social media and had sought a ransom of Rs. 1. 4 million in order to refrain from publishing the pictures.
The woman had agreed to provide an initial payment of Rs. 700,000 and had agreed to meet two men sent by the suspect at Union Road in Colombo to hand over the cash.
The two men were arrested by the Police Children and Women Bureau when they had arrived to obtain the ransom.
The suspects will be produced before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today, while investigations have been launched into the key suspect living in England. (NewsWire)
