Covid infected children to be treated at home from today

The programme introduced to treat Covid infected children with mild symptoms at their homes commenced today.

Consultant Pediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera said children between the ages of 2-14 with mild symptoms of the virus will be treated at their homes starting from today.

He said a decision was taken to implement the progammes due to a significant increase in Covid infected children.

Stating the treatment of COVID-19 at children’s hospitals has been prioritized, Dr. Perera said a child showing severe symptoms must be brought to the hospital for treatment.

The Consultant Pediatrician further said if a child is being treated at home, then a guardian must be present at home at all times, while they should also be prepared to engage with online consultations as part of the treatment.

The public can contact the hotline 1390 for further information on the programme to treat Covid infected children at their homes.

However, children suffering from long-term illnesses who have been detected with the virus must be immediately taken to a hospital, he advised.

Dr. Deepal Perera said nearly 150 Covid infected children have been admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo as of last week.

The number of child patients at the hospital has decreased, as children are being transferred to intermediate Covid care centres, he added. (NewsWire)
