State Minister Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle has called for the islandwide lockdown currently imposed in Sri Lanka to be extended for an additional two weeks.

Addressing the media today, the State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics, and COVID Disease Control said this was her personal opinion on the matter.

She further pointed out facts in the research conducted by the Head of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the Sri Jayewardenepura University Professor Neelika Malavige.

Stating that the research has proven that there is a 14% increase in Covid patients within the Colombo District, State Minister Fernandopulle said, however, this figure is probably at least 9 times higher in the community.

“Due to the prevalent increase in the Delta variant of the coronavirus, there is no telling how many positive patients there might be at present,” Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle added.

The Government imposed a 10-day islandwide lockdown on the 20th of August and later extended it till the 6th of September due to the rapid spread of the virus. (NewsWire)
