The Government has suspended the construction of the proposed jogging track in the vicinity of the Kantale Wewa.

The Director-General of Irrigation Nihal Siriwardena announced today that the proposed project in the Trincomalee District in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka has been suspended.

The project to construct a jogging track in the area was opposed by many, including residents, monks, and political activists from the area.

Objections had been raised claiming that the Government was spending money on unwanted projects at present when the country was facing a pandemic.

The Kantale Wewa reservoir has a catchment area of 83 sq mi and a capacity of 135 million cubic metres.

This is the second project relating to a jogging track to be suspended by the authorities.

Earlier in September (05), the Government announced that it has deiced to suspend the controversial Parakrama Samudra Jogging Track Project.

Director-General of Irrigation Department Nihal Siriwardena said that the rocks that were shoved into the Parakrama Samudra will be pulled back in order to restore the breakwater of the Parakrama Samudra.

The project was temporarily suspended on 27th August following strong opposition from Buddhist religious leaders in the area. (NewsWire)
