SriLankan Airlines flight crew members have reportedly voiced their objection to a request made to remove the requirement of wearing PPE kits for fully vaccinated cabin crew members on flights to Russia.

The request has been made by the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Kimarli Fernando in a letter to the Director-General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena.

A senior SriLankan Airlines steward told NewsWire that the unions will take action if such a rule is imposed, as it would put the cabin crew members at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

According to reports, the request is yet to be implemented and instructions are yet to be issued in this regard.

The Chairperson of Sri Lanka Tourism, Kimarli Fernando in a letter to the Director-General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena requested to remove several health restrictions to enable Russian tourists to visit Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, Fernando has proposed the following suggestions:

  • To remove the requirement for the flight crew to wear PPE kits
  • To remove the requirement for a PCR test to be conducted 72 hours before boarding the flight for fully vaccinated persons
  • No PCR testing for children below 12 years
  • To allow for Rapid Antigen Tests to be conducted for tourists on arrival at the airport.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga and State Minister of Regional Cooperation Tharaka Balasooriya are currently in Russia to promote tourism to Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
