Another expert resigns, Health Ministry makes request from Dr. Wijewickrama

Senior Consultant Physician at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama has been urged to reconsider his decision to resign from the Covid Prevention Technical Committee.

Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath told reporters yesterday that the service of Dr. Wijewickrama is essential in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic at present.

Stating that Dr. Wijewickrama’s personal opinion is respected, Dr. Hemantha Herath called on the senior Consultant Physician to reconsider his decision for the benefit of the citizens. 

According to reports, Dr. Wijewickrama has informed the Director-General of Health Services and the Secretary to the Health Ministry by email of his intention to resign.

Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama is said to have resigned due to not being able to accept certain decisions drawn by the Covid Prevention Technical Committee. 

Meanwhile, Specialist Dr. Ashoka Gunaratne has also reportedly decided to step down from the Covid Prevention Technical Committee.

According to media reports, Dr. Gunaratne has revealed that he had decided to resign as the Committee was not utilizing his full potential. 

Dr. Ashoka Gunaratne has served in the Covid Prevention Technical Committee for nearly a year and a half. (NewsWire)
