UK issues new travel advisory to Sri Lanka

The United Kingdom (UK) has permitted only essential travel to Sri Lanka, eventhough the island nation has been removed from its red list.

Sri Lanka was removed from the Red List and moved to the Amber List with effect from yesterday (22), but the UK has prohibited all other travel to the country.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has advised against all but essential travel to the whole of Sri Lanka based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.

As per the travel advisory, there is a high risk of changes to flights and airport operations at short notice due to a prevalence of COVID-19 cases in the community.

Lockdowns are being imposed in affected areas, and travel restrictions may also be imposed at short notice, the travel advisory further said.

Stating that terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Sri Lanka, the travel advisory said attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. (NewsWire)
