Lieutenant Colonel & 13 soldiers arrested over alleged murder

A Lieutenant Colonel of the Mattakkuliya Army Intelligence Base has been arrested for aiding and abetting the alleged murder of the Thotalanga Aruna Elle team captain.

According to Lankadeepa, the Colonel was arrested yesterday by the Colombo North Crime Investigations Unit over the murder.

The suspect, who is from the 6th Gemunu regiment, has been handed over to the Police following a request made by the Police Department from the Army.

Interrogations of other suspects arrested over the incident had revealed that the murder was committed with the knowledge of the Colonel. 

The captain of the Aruna Elle team of Thotalanga, 36-year-old Akila Sampath Rathnasiri of Batuwatte Ragama, was abducted while on his way home on 17 August at Madampe.

According to investigations, the father of three was reportedly murdered thereafter. 

The victim’s wife, who is the Grama Seva officer of Samagipura, has been arrested along with 13 soldiers of the Mattakkuliya Army Camp over the murder.

Investigations have revealed that the woman had been involved in an affair with one of the suspects, who is a Corporal in the Army.
