Drug screening tools to detect the presence of drugs in drivers will be brought down to Sri Lanka in the coming days, Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weearsekara said.

He stated that nearly 27,000 people have died in road accidents within a period of 10 years in Sri Lanka.

Stating that only approximately 29,000 people had died in the 30-year civil war in Sri Lanka, the Minister said in comparison 27,000 people have died due to road accidents just in 10 years.

Minister Sarath Weerasekara pointed out that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs has been cited as the key cause of road accidents.

Speeding has been mainly reported due to people driving under the influence of drugs. There are no tools or technologies to detect such cases in Sri Lanka yet, he said.

The Minister of Public Security said measures have been taken to bring down drug screening tools to detect the presence of drugs in drivers and the tools will arrive in the country in the coming days.

He added that the equipment will be authorized for usage after including it in the necessary laws of the country. (NewsWire)
