The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has been instructed to conduct a prompt investigation into the incidents involving State Minister Lohan Ratwatte at the Welikada and Anuradhapura prisons.

The order was issued by the Supreme Court today when the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by eight inmates from the Anuradhapura prison was taken up for hearing today.

State Minister Ratwatte has been accused of entering the two prisons on 12th September under the influence of alcohol and threatening eight inmates at the Anuradhapura prison by pointing a pistol towards them.

Following the incident, the eight inmates of the Anuradhapura prison had filed an FR petition at the Supreme Court over the incident.

The three-member bench comprising justices Gamini Amarasekera, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Janak de Silva today also ordered the IGP to obtain the advice of the Attorney General with regard to the investigation.

The Court further ordered the Anuradhapura Prison Superintendent to transfer the eight inmates to another prison.

The petition will be taken up for consideration once again on the 15th of February. (NewsWire)
