Top agriculture official removed for criticizing Govt. policy

Professor Buddhi Marambe of the Faculty of Agriculture from the University of Peradeniya has been removed from all posts he held at the Ministry of Agriculture with immediate effect.

The directive has been issued to the Secretary to the Ministry Senior Professor Udith Jayasinghe by Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage. 

Issuing a statement, the Ministry said Professor Buddhi Marambe has been removed from the Expert Committee to formulate a National Agriculture Policy, Sri Lanka Agriculture Sector Modernization Project, and the Smallholder Agribusiness Partnerships Programme. 

The Ministry said allegations have been levelled against him for launching various campaigns against the Government’s decision to suspend the importation of the herbicide Glyphosate.

Professor Buddhi Marambe has further been accused of criticizing the Government’s moves to engage in agricultural activities that safeguard the environment, the Ministry added. 

According to the Ministry, Professor Buddhi Marambe had influenced the university sector, social activist groups, and the public by making controversial statements against the agricultural policies of the Government. (NewsWire)
