Vice-Chancellors have been given permission to reopen state universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced today.

Chairman of the UGC Professor Sampath Amaratunga said Vice-Chancellors can reopen the universities on any date starting from today.

He further said, however, the universities will be allowed to open subject to the COVID-19 health guidelines.

Under the first stage, only students who have completed two weeks after getting both doses of a vaccine against COVID-19 will be allowed to attend lectures.

Universities have also been advised to resume classes for only 25 percent of students under the first phase.

State universities have been closed since August due to the rapid spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

University academic activities were conducted online until some teachers withdrew to stage a trade union action over salary anomalies. (NewsWire)
