Update on CEB unions protest: Leave cancelled for employees

November 2, 2021 at 4:42 PM

Leave of all Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) employees has been cancelled from today until further notice.

An official from the CEB told reporters today that the CEB has issued a circular notifying the employees of the decision.

According to the circular, the CEB staff cannot take leave without the permission of the Deputy General Manager.

Employees have also been prohibited from coming to Colombo using official vehicles belonging to the CEB, the official further said.

He warned that if done so, it shall be deemed as misuse of state property.

The move comes ahead of a large-scale protest planned by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) United Trade Union (TU) Alliance for tomorrow (03).

Responding to the circular, the Alliance told the media today that it has decided to converge in Colombo tomorrow after applying for sick leave.

Convenor of the CEB United Trade Union Alliance Ranjan Jayalal said they will inform the people that what has been planned for tomorrow is not a strike, but an agitation.

The CEB United Trade Union Alliance will stage a protest to urge the Government to immediately suspend the agreement with US-based energy company New Fortress Energy Inc over the sale of 40% of shares of the Yugadanavi liquefied natural gas (LNG) Power Plant in Kerawalapitiya.

Ranjan Jayalal has assured that there will be no disruption to the power supply during the protest.

Stating that the employees at all power plants will be summoned to Colombo as part of the protest, he, however, warned that in case of a disruption to the power supply, there will be no one to fix it.

Jayalal stressed that the CEB United Trade Union Alliance will not take responsibility for any breakdowns reported at power plants during this period. (NewsWire)
