A total of 7,167 people from 1,836 families have been severely affected due to the inclement weather experienced in Sri Lanka.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said five people have been reported dead and 3 people have sustained injuries as of today.

Three members from the same family have died, while another member of the family has been injured following an earth slip in the Dombemada area in Rambukkana in the Kegalle District.

The DMC said the house of the family had been completely covered by debris from the earth slip that had occurred this morning.

The Sri Lanka Army together with officials from the DMC had recovered the bodies of the victims and had rescued one man.

The victims have been identified as a woman and her two daughters aged 8 and 14, while her husband has been hospitalized with injuries.

Meanwhile,  a woman has died after an earth embankment had collapsed onto a house in the Wennoruwa area in Narammala.

The Police said the victim has been identified as a 23-year-old woman.

Furthermore, the DMC has issued a red alert to people living in low-lying areas along the Maha-Oya to be vigilant of floods.

The DMC said floods can occur in the Alawwa, Divulapitiya, Meerigama, Pannala, and Wennapuwa areas.

The Centre further said floods can also occur in the Negombo, Katana, Narammala, and Dankotuwa Pradeshiya Sabha areas due to the heavy showers experienced in the areas.

The water levels of the Kelani, Gin, and Kalu rivers are also on the rise due to heavy rains.

The Disaster Management Centre has requested people living in low-lying areas along the rivers to remain vigilant of flash floods. (NewsWire)
