CEB engineers temporarily call off work-to-rule campaign

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Engineers’ Union has temporarily called off its work to rule campaign.

The CEB Engineers’ Union was engaged in the campaign, announcing only an 08-hour work shift, to object to the Government’s decision on selling shares of the Yugadanavi power plant to US firm, New Fortress.

However, as an islandwide power outage was reported in Sri Lanka today for several hours, the CEB Engineers’ Union has called off its campaign.

The decision has been taken in order for the CEB employees to engage in power restoration work.

Meanwhile, the CEB General Manager M.R. Ranatunga said today that the islandwide disruption of power supply is suspected to be an act of sabotage by the CEB Engineers’ Union.

Ranatunga further accused the CEB Engineers Union of deliberately dragging power restoration work.

He added that, however, the power supply has already been restored in some parts of the country as of now.

The CEB General Manager further said that measures are underway to restore power to the entire country within today, but it is being restored slowly and will take a few more hours.

Responding to the CEB General Manager, the CEB Engineers Union refuted the allegations levelled against them.

Earlier, it was reported that the power outage was reported due to a failure in three sub-stations that provide electricity to the National Grid.

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said it will take at least three hours for the complete restoration of the power supply.

Meanwhile, the Chief Engineer of the Operations Unit of the CEB has filed a complaint with the Slave Island Police over a power failure that was reported in the Welivita Consumer Authority area last night.

Filing the complaint today, the Engineer called on the Police to investigate if the incident was carried out by a group of people with the intention of sabotage.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been handed over authority to conduct a probe into the matter. (NewsWire)
