Sri Lanka has decided to suspend the distribution of gas to the local market until further notice, State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna announced today.

He said the Ministry of Consumer Protection has written to both Litro Gas Lanka and Laugfs Gas PLC to suspend their distribution of gas cylinders.

The State Minister said the distribution will be suspended until the smell of Ethyl Mercaptan level is increased to 14.

State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna further said samples of LP gas were obtained for testing from the Litro vessel which was docked at the Colombo Port yesterday.

He said unloading from the vessel will only be permitted if it matches with the local standard composition requirements.

Following the announcement, Litro Gas Lanka said it has suspended the distribution of its domestic gas cylinders islandwide until further notice.

Meanwhile, the Expert Committee appointed by the President to investigate gas-related issues will visit the Litro Gas terminal in Muthurajawela today.

Nearly 20 gas-related explosions were reported from various parts of the country in the last 24 hours ending at 06 am today. (NewsWire)
