WATCH : Health Ministry statement on SL’s first Omicron patient

Sri Lanka today detected its first infection of the newly detected Covid variant, ‘Omicron’, the Health Promotion Bureau (HPB) announced today.

The Bureau said a Sri Lankan National who had returned from South Africa has been confirmed to have contracted the Omicron variant.

Meanwhile, Deputy- Director of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said necessary measures were already in place to detect the variant.

The health authorities are taking necessary preventive and curtailment measures with regard to the variant, he further assured. 

Dr. Herath also stated that the public need not worry or panic over the detection of the ‘Omicron’ variant in the country. 

The new Covid variant was first detected in South Africa, following which several countries, including Sri Lanka, issued travel bans on visitors from a number of African countries.

The travel ban was issued as a precautionary measure as over 30 countries have now detected the variant. (NewsWire)
