Substandard LP gas has been reportedly found in the latest ship that had arrived at the Colombo Port to supply gas for Litro Gas Lanka.

Sources said Sri Lankan authorities are likely to reject the latest ship as it does not comply with the required level of Ethyl mercaptan.

They further said that the Technical Committee appointed to inquire into the level of Ethyl mercaptan will take a final decision on the matter today.

Earlier this month, the distribution of domestic gas cylinders was suspended after several gas-related accidents were reported from various parts of the country.

Following the suspension, a committee was appointed by the President to investigate the accidents and inspect the quality of the LP gas and cylinders.

The Government further said samples of LP gas were obtained for testing from the Litro vessel which was docked at the Colombo Port.

It added that unloading from the vessel will only be permitted if it matches with the local standard composition requirements.

The authorities revealed that the distribution of gas cylinders will be suspended until the smell of Ethyl Mercaptan level is increased to 14.

Thereafter, old stocks of gas cylinders were recalled by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), while new stocks with a different seal were permitted to be distributed by both Litro Gas Lanka and Laugfs Gas PLC. (NewsWire)
