Litro Gas ordered not to unload new gas shipment

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has directed Litro Gas Lanka not to unload the latest LP gas shipment that arrived in Sri Lanka on Saturday (11).

The Authority issued the order as the samples obtained from the gas ship do not comply with the required standards of the Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI).

Samples of the gas were tested after several incidents of gas-related accidents were reported from various parts of the country in the past few weeks.

Litro Gas Lanka and Laugfs Gas PLC were ordered to suspend the distribution of domestic gas cylinders and recall old stocks that were issued before 4th December.

The suspension was in effect until the Presidential Committee appointed to investigate gas-related accidents had tested samples of the gas and valves.

The authorities announced that gas cylinders will only be permitted to be supplied if the level of Ethyl mercaptan was found to be at 14.

Thereafter, the CAA permitted the two gas suppliers to deliver new stocks of domestic gas cylinders that were released with a new seal and packaging, as the new stocks were in line with the requirements of the SLSI.

Meanwhile, the Technical Committee appointed to inquire into the level of Ethyl mercaptan had tested the samples on the new shipment for Litro Gas and was set to announce its decision today.

Based on the test results, the Committee has revealed that the shipment does not comply with the requirements of the Sri Lanka Standards Institute.

As a result, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has directed Litro Gas Lanka not to unload the latest LP gas shipment. (NewsWire)
