Former Magistrate Thilina Gamage acquitted over elephant calf case

Former Magistrate Thilina Gamage has been acquitted over the case filed on the illegal possession of an elephant calf.

The Colombo High Court today ordered Gamage to be acquitted and released from all charges filed in connection to the case. 

The Attorney General had filed indictments against four suspects, former Magistrate Thilina Gamage, Chandrarathna Bandara Yatawara, and Wildlife Officers Upali Padmasiri and Priyanka Sanjeewani on the case. 

The indictments were filed under 25 counts including the possession of an elephant calf without a license, conspiracy to tender false documents, and registration of the concerned elephant calf by producing forged documents.

Former Magistrate Thilina Gamage was also interdicted after being named as an accused in the case in 2016. (NewsWire)
