A total of four people who have contracted the Omicron variant of Covid-19 have been identified so far in Sri Lanka.

The detection was announced by Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, the Director of the Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of Sri Jayewardenepura University.

He said the detection was made in samples tested at the university’s laboratory.

Dr. Jeewandara further warned that the cases of the Omicron virus may increase in the future.

He urged the public to obtain the booster COVID-19 vaccine dose.

Sri Lanka first detected the Omicron variant in a woman who had returned from South Africa earlier this month.

She was detected with the virus while she had been directed to undergo home quarantine. (NewsWire)
