The health authorities are currently collecting information on the three new Omicron infections that were detected in Sri Lanka yesterday (16), Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said.

Addressing the media yesterday, he said among the cases, one person is a foreign national and has already left the country.

Another individual is someone who had arrived in Sri Lanka and his close associate is the third person found with the variant.

No information has been reported on these people as yet. Therefore, the health authorities are collecting the necessary information.

The first person to be found with Omicron in Sri Lanka is a separate case and four omicron cases have been detected so far in Sri Lanka, he said.

Stating that apart from the first Omicron case, three more have been detected as of now, Dr. Herath said two of the cases were detected after testing samples that were obtained from the Katunayake airport.

“We are yet to receive detail on which areas these Omicron cases have been detected. The Epidemiology Unit is tracing the contacts of the infected person who has already left the country and is taking necessary precautionary measures in the affected areas,” he said.

Dr. Hemantha Herath further said that more information in this regard will be revealed to the public once the health authorities receive the necessary details. (NewsWire)
