Next few weeks decisive, Health Ministry warns

The Health Ministry has warned that the next few weeks will be decisive for Sri Lanka with regard to the coronavirus epidemic. 

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Samitha Ginige said that despite the virus having been contained in Sri Lanka currently with the spread of the Omicron variant in several countries, there is a possibility for the variant to spread in Sri Lanka. 

A total of seven Omicron cases have so far been detected in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Samitha Ginige pointed out that it was essential to obtain the booster Covid vaccine dose to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant in the country. 

Stating that people have commenced travelling around the country due to the festive season, he said if necessary health precautions and guidelines are not adhered to then it could lead to another outbreak. 

Dr. Samitha Ginige urged the public to strictly follow the health guidelines when travelling about and to obtain the COVID-19 vaccine and booster dose to safeguard themselves against the virus. (NewsWire)
