41 new Omicron cases have been detected in Sri Lanka, the Director of the Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Sri Jayewardenepura University Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said.

He said the new detections bring the total number of Omicron cases found in Sri Lanka to 45 as of today.

Dr. Jeewandara said the cases have been confirmed by the Laboratory at the Sri Jayawardenapura University.

He further said that Sri Lanka is equipped to face an outbreak of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Stating that going into 2022, the Government has plenty of mitigations measures against Omicron, he added that the booster COVID-19 vaccine dose has been made a priority to prevent severe disease.

Dr. Chandima Jeewandara urged the public to obtain the booster COVID-19 vaccine dose in order to protect themselves and their loved ones against the virus.

Sri Lanka first detected the Omicron variant in a woman who had returned from South Africa in early December.

She was detected with the virus while she had been directed to undergo home quarantine.

Thereafter, on 16th December, Dr. Jeewandara announced that three more Omicron cases had been detected.

However, following continuous sequencing by the Sri Jayawardenapura University 41 more new Omicron cases have been detected thus far. (NewsWire)
