Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake has been permitted to pursue his higher education from prison.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) member is currently serving a 4-year prison sentence after being convicted for Contempt of Court charges.

The Commissioner-General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said Ranjan Ramanayake had made a request from the authorities to pursue his higher education.

Taking into consideration his request, the Justice Minister had issued a letter granting permission in this regard.

Thushara Upuldeniya said Ramanayake will be allowed to follow his external degree course lectures from the Welikada Prison, while he will be permitted to attend online lectures under the supervision of a prison rehabilitation officer.

He further said the former MP will also be permitted to bring in textbooks, supplementary notes, and other necessary items for his higher education.

Ranjan Ramanayake has applied for an External Degree Course in Youth and Community Development from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Open University of Sri Lanka.

He has reportedly passed the required Basic Certificate Course. (NewsWire)
