Former Western Province Governor Azath Salley has filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) over his unlawful detention for several months by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The Leader of the National Unity Alliance has also filed a complaint with the Commission against the statements made by Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara over his arrest.

Salley was detained by the CID in March 2021 under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) over a statement he had made to the media pertaining to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

In December 2021, the Colombo High Court acquitted and released Azath Salley from the case.

Addressing the media after visiting the HRCSL today, Salley condemned the actions of Minister Weerasekara in connection to his arrest.

He further claimed that Weerasekara had acted in such a manner after colluding with certain businessmen, adding that evidence could be found by tracing the phone calls made to the Minister’s phone prior to and on the day of his arrest.

Stating that the Police had acted on unverified information and two media institutions had distorted his speech, Azath Salley said he will initiate legal action against the two media institutions. (NewsWire)
