Addressing an event in Monaragala, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that not a single foreign loan has been taken during his two year tenure as President.
“I haven’t take a single cent as loan during my 2 year tenure. We have to pay US $ 6.3 billion yearly as loan repayment. These loans were taken by previous governments. It could have been for development activities or any other matter, but we have to now pay back every year” he said.
Meanwhile, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Patali Champika Ranawaka has released a list of loans reportedly taken by the current government.
The list shared by the SJB MP in a Facebook post states that US $ 1,875 million were obtained as loans in year 2020 alone. In 2021, total loans amassed to over US $ 3,300 million.
Accordingly, as per the details shared by Champika Ranawaka, during the past two years, a total sum of over US $ 5.18 billion has been obtained as loans.
