The retired doctor who was arrested in connection to the hand grenade that was found at the All Saints’ church in Borella has been identified as the father of Oshala Herath, a well-known social activist and UNP Candidate for the previous general election.

Five people were earlier detained over the incident that was reported on the 11th of January 2022, while the Colombo South Crimes Division had arrested the doctor on Monday (17) and had handed him over to the Colombo Crimes Division yesterday (19).

Speaking to reporters on the ordeal that he and his father had to go through during the arrest, Herath said a large team of officers had entered his house and had instructed his father to be seated after opening all the doors and windows in the house.

Stating that his father who is 75-years-old is a retired Government doctor, Herath said that his wife, sister, 11-year-old son, and two workers had been instructed to remain in the kitchen and rooms in the house.

Oshala Herath further explained that the officers had confiscated their mobile phones and electronic devices, and had seized a toy gun used by his son.

Revealing that he is a collector of air rifles for the last 15 years, Herath said the officers had also seized four air rifles that were part of his collection.

Oshala Herath also noted that he was denied an opportunity to visit his father, who is currently detained by the Police.

The retired doctor had been arrested in Piliyandala following the interrogation of a 65-year-old suspect who was initially arrested over the hand grenade that was found at the Borella church.

Investigations had revealed that the suspect had been employed as a security officer at the retired doctor’s private clinic that is located in Piliyandala. (NewsWire)
