The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital has once again been allocated for COVID-19 patients, the Deputy Director-General of the Hospital Specialist Doctor Chandana Gajanayake has revealed.

He further said that a rise in Covid cases has resulted in the hospital reducing priority for regular services.

“A gradual increase in COVID-19 cases has once again been observed in Sri Lanka at present. It is believed that a majority of the Sri Lankans are already vaccinated. Even though we have been vaccinated it is essential to be cautious of the virus. However, we have noticed an increase in the number of Covid patients being admitted to the National Hospital at present,” he said.

Stating that the hospital was able to resume general services after the number of Covid patients had significantly decreased, Doctor Gajanayake said once again the hospital has been forced to lower the priority given to regular medical services.

“We have been pushed to allocate the ICU for Covid patients and provide priority for the treatment of Covid patients again,” he added.

Meanwhile, the President of the Public Health Inspectors Union Upul Rohana has revealed there is a significant increase in the detection of Covid patients in schools.

He said schools with closed classrooms must remain cautious, warning that if there is an increase in cases it could lead to a new cluster.

Upul Rohana added that the situation could be prevented if parents and school administrations focus more attention in this regard. (NewsWire)
