A shrimp farm on a 42-acre land in Rakava, Hambantota was declared open by State Minister of Fisheries Kanchana Wijesekara yesterday.

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Kumar Sangakkara who is an investor of the project also took part in the opening ceremony.

Operations of the shrimp farm which covers half the extent of the 42-acre land commenced yesterday.

The exportation of shrimp has led to it becoming a high-income earner sector due to the policies of the incumbent Government.

A 162% increase has been observed in shrimp export value in 2021 in comparison to 2020.

The shrimp farm has been launched with an investment of Rs. 191 million from the National Aquaculture Development Authority and Rs. 300 million from Taprobane Seafood Private Limited.

The shrimp farm is the first such venture to be launched in the Southern Province, while steps are being taken to identify more ideal locations within the Hambantota District to set up another shrimp farm. (NewsWire)
