Measures have been taken to encourage the use of bicycles to address several issues including air pollution, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera said today.

Minister Amaraweera said a cabinet paper has been drafted pertaining to developing the use of bicycles in Sri Lanka.

A decision has been taken to provide an incentive to state employees employed in institutions under the Environment Ministry who travel to work using bicycles.

It has also been decided to look into the allocation of a bicycle lane on the main roads, he said.

The Minister pointed out that the Government spends Rs. 103.50 per km for each vehicle that travels during peak traffic or in traffic congestions.

Minister Amaraweera added that the facts have been obtained following a survey that was conducted in this regard. (NewsWire)
