The Colombo High Court has acquitted and released Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa from all charges pertaining to the Divineguma case.

Minister Basil Rajapaksa has been released from the case along with former Director-General of the Divineguma Department Kithsiri Ranawaka.

The decision was announced by the Colombo High Court today.

In January, the court announced that the decision on whether to release Minister Basil Rajapaksa without calling for evidence from the defence, as a request by the defence counsel in the misappropriation of public funds case will be delivered on the 1st of February.

The counsels representing the defendants had requested the court to acquit and release their clients from all charges pertaining to the case.

The Attorney General had filed indictments at the Colombo High Court against the two suspects for allegedly printing 5 million almanacs with the image of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, costing Rs.29.4 million.

The almanacs had been printed to be used as election propaganda material during the January-2015 Presidential election. (NewsWire)
