February 3, 2022 at 4:16 PM

The Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has decided to boycott the Independence Day celebrations which will be commemorated tomorrow (04).

Member of the Colombo Archdiocese Communication Unit Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando told the media today that Cardinal Ranjith has decided to cancel the service he usually conducts on Independence Day.

Fr. Fernando further said the decision has been taken as a mark of protest against the shortcomings in the investigations carried out on the Borella Church hand grenade case and the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

“We are disturbed as to why the caretaker of the church is being continuously detained despite the proof that he has nothing to do with the All Saints’ Church grenade issue. CCTV Camera footage has made it clear that this person has nothing to do with the grenade episode,” Fr. Fernando said.

Recently, all the other suspects except for the caretaker of the church had been released from Police custody.

Following is the message issued by the Archbishop in view of the Independence Day of Sri Lanka which will be commemorated tomorrow:
