Navy intercepts 200kg of heroin dumped into the sea

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has foiled another drug smuggling attempt in international waters south of Sri Lanka.

In a statement, the Navy said another drug-carrying foreign vessel was intercepted in international waters south of Sri Lanka on 26th January 2022.

The special operation was carried out in coordination with the Sri Lanka Police and intelligence agencies.

This foreign multiday fishing trawler had remained on high seas to transfer the consignment to a local fishing vessel and had jettisoned about 200kg of heroin in 08 sacks into the sea when it was approached by the Navy. 

During a further search of the vessel, the Navy has managed to recover about 250g of heroin and a satellite phone. 

Accordingly, the Navy nabbed 09 foreign suspects aboard in connection to this racket. 

The Sri Lanka Navy said the apprehended suspects along with the foreign vessel were brought to the port of Colombo for further investigations today (03). (NewsWire)
