Ragama assault: State Minister Arundika Fernando to step down

State Minister Arundika Fernando says he will step down from his Ministerial Portfolio until a thorough investigation is conducted into an incident of assault involving his son in Ragama. 

Arundika Fernando is the State Minister of Coconut, Kithul, Palmyrah, and Rubber Cultivation Promotion and Related Industrial Product Manufacturing, and Export Diversification.

His 23-year-old son was arrested last night after being involved in the incident where a group of students attached to the Medical Faculty of the University of Kelaniya situated in Ragama had been assaulted last morning. 

Four students attached to the Medical Faculty of the University of Kelaniya were hospitalized after being assaulted by a group of outsiders.

The incident had occurred due to a clash between two student groups and the group of outsiders, including the driver of the State Minister, are said to have engaged in the brawl in support of one student group. 

State Minister Arundika Fernando’s son had been arrested after surrendering to the Ragama Police through his lawyers last night. 

Six suspects, including the State Minister’s son, have been arrested so far in connection to the incident.

They were remanded until the 7th of February by the Wattala Magistrate’s Court today. (NewsWire)
