February 3, 2022 at 10:26 AM

Sri Lanka must focus attention on locally manufacturing vehicles, Finance Minister Basil Rajapksa said.

He made the observation when responding to a question raised by a journalist on the Government’s stance on the ban imposed on vehicle importation.

Journalist: Can you tell us if vehicle imports will be allowed in the future?

Minister Basil Rajapaksa: Prior to importing vehicles we need to bring down lentils. I am focusing on how to secure a container of lentils by tomorrow morning. Let us somehow manufacture a car locally.

Meanwhile, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had earlier announced that the Government will prioritize the importation of electric vehicles in the future.

He made the observation when presenting the Government’s Policy Statement during the second session of the 09th Parliament of Sri Lanka that took place on the 18th of January 2022. (NewsWire)
