The Prisons Department has not been issued any directive pertaining to the release of former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake, Prisons spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said today.

Meanwhile, the Justice Ministry also confirmed to NewsWire that they are not aware of any moves to release the former MP.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday said that he was confident that Ramanayake will be released from prison on Independence Day, which is commemorated today.

MP Premadasa further said that he will make a special request from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to include MP Ramanayake’s name in the list of prisoners to be granted a presidential pardon.

He added that if the Samagi Jana Balawegaya member is not released today then the party will launch a democratic fight until his release.

A total of 197 prisoners were released today after being granted a presidential pardon in view of Sri Lanka’s 74th Independence Day.

Over hundreds of supporters of Ranjan Ramanayake were seen in front of the Welikada prison hoping for his release today. (NewsWire)
