Uzbekistan Airways, the flag carrier airline of Uzbekistan, commenced operations at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRI) in Hambantota today (09).

The airline is expected to operate a weekly flight between Uzbekistan and Mattala every Wednesday starting from today.

The Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited had held a discussion with the airline at the Air Service World Congress 2021 Forum that was held in Dubai last December.

Following the discussion, Uzbekistan Airways had decided to commence operations at the Mattala Airport.

It has been reported that the Government concessions provided to airlines had played a key role in attracting the airlines.

With the operations of Uzbekistan Airways, more tourists are expected to arrive in Sri Lanka which will help revive the tourism industry that was severely affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, SkyUp Airlines and Gullivair Air are also operating and have planned to continue scheduled charter flights to the Mattala Airport. (NewsWire)
