The Sri Lanka Police has revealed that civil activist Shehan Malaka Gamage was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today on the directive of the Attorney General (AG).

Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said Gamage was arrested in Panadura as per the progress of an investigation conducted against him on the comments made pertaining to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

SSP Nihal Thalduwa further said that the civil activist has been arrested under the Penal Code.

Shehan Malaka Gamage has been questioned by the CID on eight previous occasions as well, including in August 2021.

Gamage who had been outspoken last year during a media briefing on the investigations into the 2019 Easter attacks had claimed that the attacks were a political conspiracy and had called on the Government to investigate it.

The social activist was also instrumental in organizing the black flag campaign that was proposed by the Catholic Church of Sri Lanka last year to protest against the investigations into the Easter attacks. (Newswire)
