Civil activist Shehan Malaka Gamage who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday has been granted bail.

Gamage has been released after being granted bail by Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court today.

The Civil activist was arrested yesterday on the directive of the Attorney General (AG) pertaining to a statement he had made on the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks during a media briefing last year.

At the time, Gamage had claimed that it was a political conspiracy and had called on the Government to investigate it.

The social activist was also instrumental in organizing the black flag campaign that was proposed by the Catholic Church of Sri Lanka last year to protest against the investigations into the Easter attacks.

Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Colombo, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has slammed the Police and the Attorney General over their conduct pertaining to the arrest of  Civil activist Shehan Malaka Gamage.

Stating that the Sri Lanka Police must be present in uniform when making an arrest and must use a police jeep for such a purpose, he added that Police officers must read the charges against any accused when making an arrest.

The Archbishop of Colombo also slammed the present Attorney General, stating that he is a public servant and not a political stooge.

Pointing out that the Attorney General is expected to enforce the recommendations of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry that probed the 2019 Easter Sunday Attacks, the Archbishop said he is instead making attempts to arrest those who are calling for justice over the Terror Attacks.

Holding the Government accountable for these events, the Archbishop of Colombo further called on the public to respond at the appropriate time to the attempts being made to suppress the truth through intimidation. (NewsWire)
