The Government lacks necessary funds to make the payment to release three fuel ships that are berthed outside the Colombo Port, Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila said.

He told Daily Mirror that the Government only has money to settle the payment for one fuel ship.

Stating that funds have been released to unload petrol from one ship, the Minister said there are no sufficient funds to release the other two ships that contain diesel and fuel.

Minister Gammanpila said that the Government does not have US Dollars to pay for fuel, and warned that thereby, Sri Lanka risks running out of fuel in the near future.

Commenting on the fuel shortage in the country, he said measures have been taken to distribute fuel in limited supply to fuel sheds.

He said earlier three fuel bowsers used to be dispatched to one location, but due to the shortage of fuel only one or two fuel boswers are currently being sent. (NewsWire)
