A gas shortage has been reported once again in some areas of Sri Lanka due to the existing dollar crisis.

Despite three vessels containing gas that was imported by Litro Gas Lanka having reached Sri Lanka, the Company is unable to unload the gas due to being unable to open Letters of Credit (LOC) as a result of the dollar crisis.

As such, currently, Litro Gas is only being supplied for industrial purposes and crematoriums.

Gas cylinders are also being distributed to the local market currently, but it has been reported that a shortage of gas is imminent.

Meanwhile, private gas supplier Laugfs Gas has completely suspended the distribution of gas cylinders.

Earlier today, the two primary gas suppliers of Sri Lanka, Litro Gas Lanka and Laugfs Gas, revealed that they are unable to import and distribute gas.

Hiru Tv reported that the two gas importing companies stated that this was due to banks not permitting them to open letters of credit (LOC).

Last year, Sri Lanka faced a shortage of gas after Laugfs Gas temporarily suspended operations.

The company suspended operations due to difficulties faced in opening Letters of Credit (LCs) and the accumulation of losses.

Thereafter, Litro Gas catered to the demand covering the consumers of Laugfs Gas as well.

Laugfs Gas later recommenced operations and commenced distributing necessary gas stocks. (NewsWire)
