Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe warned that if Sri Lanka does not address the current crisis soon then it will lead to a situation similar to that of Greece.

The United National Party (UNP) Leader further said now is not the time to try and overthrow the Government, instead, the main focus should be on addressing the crisis faced by the country.

Greece faced a sovereign debt crisis in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2007–2008. It reached the populace through a series of sudden reforms and austerity measures that led to impoverishment and loss of income and property, as well as a small-scale humanitarian crisis.

Pointing out that Sri Lanka could be the next Greece, MP Wickremesinghe said efforts must be taken to save Sri Lanka.

“There needs to be a united effort to reach an agreement to address the economic issue,” he said.

The former Prime Minister added that, however, a National Government will not work in the current circumstances.
