The Sri Lanka Petroleum Private Tanker Owners’ Association (SLPPTOA) says several issues pertaining to the programme launched to distribute fuel have resulted in a shortage of fuel.

Secretary to the Association Shantha Silva said these issues have resulted in long queues still being witnessed at fuel stations across the country.

He pointed out that fuel is not being distributed to fuel stations as per the programme drawn up for the distribution of fuel.

Stating that some fuel stations are yet to receive fuel stocks, Shantha Silva said that some fuel stations have been dispatched more than the necessary amount of fuel.

The lack of planning and systematic distribution has caused a shortage at several fuel stations, he added.

Meanwhile, the Government has settled a payment of US$ 42 million to a Singaporean Company to release another vessel with fuel that was docked at the Colombo Port.

The Ministry of Power said the vessel contains 20,000 Metric Tonnes (MT) of Diesel and 20,000 MT of Jet Fuel.

The ship has been released after it had been docked at the Colombo Port for the last 12 days.

The Ministry of Power further said that the unloading of the fuel will begin today.

Another ship with 35,000 MT of petrol obtained under the Indian Credit LIne is also reported to have arrived in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
