Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been criticized for resorting to personal attacks against senior Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar.
MP Wickremesinghe had made comments on the MP’s attire and called on him to shave his beard during a talk show with a local media that was telecast last night.
The host of the talk show had raised a question on the video footage of a statement made by MP Bakeer Markar on the legal standing of the recently held All-Party Conference and MP Wickremesinghe’s participation in it.
In the video, MP Bakeer Markar is also seen questioning MP Wickremesinghe’s declaration that his friendship with Government Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva prompted him to attend the All-Party Conference.
The United National Party (UNP) leader refused to answer the question that was raised by the host, and instead, was seen commenting on MP Markar’s attire., hair and beard.
MP Wickremesinghe said the SJB MP should comb his hair, button up his shirt, and shave his beard prior to posing questions.
Commenting on the incident, many social media users have condemned the former Prime Minister over his actions.
Many social media users also questioned the relevance of the UNP leader’s response to the question that had been raised by the interview host. (NewsWire)
