Over 50 Parliamentarians including Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs will remain independent in Parliament if the Government decides to continue ignoring the voices of the public, Former State Minister Nimal Lanza warned today.

He said, “ If the Government decides to continue ignoring the public’s voices and continue to be in power then over 50 MPs including several from the SLPP will remain independent in Parliament.”

Speaking to local media, he further warned that the said MPs will ensure that the Government will lose the majority of 113 seats in Parliament when Parliament convenes tomorrow (05).

Former State Minister Nimal Lanza’s statement comes after all Cabinet Ministers tendered their resignations to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.

The Cabinet has been forced to step down due to large public protests breaking out in several parts of the country over Sri Lanka’s worsening economic crisis.

Public protests have been rampant, despite the curfew that was imposed by the Government over the weekend, calling on the President to resign over Sri Lanka’s economic crisis.

Peaceful protests were held in several areas yesterday, with the public holding placards and chanting for the President to step down.

Sri Lankans residing overseas also engaged in peaceful protests in several countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and the Maldives to show their solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
