Over 40 Parliamentarians informed Parliament of their decision to function independently from today.

Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa announced that 17 MPs from the 11 constituent parties of the Government have decided to function as an independent group in Parliament.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Anura Priyadharshana Yapa also announced that 12 ruling party MPs have also decided to function independently in Parliament from today.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) leader Maithripala Sirisena said the 16 Parliamentarians of the party have decided to function as an independent group in Parliament.

The Parliamentarians announced their decisions during the Parliament session underway today.

Earlier this morning, the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) informed the media that it has decided to function as an independent group in Parliament from today.

The Parliamentarians have decided to function independently at a time when President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had revealed that he is ready to hand over power to form a government to any group that would show the majority support in Parliament with 113 seats.

The public has engaged in peaceful protests across the country calling on the President and his Government to resign over the downfall of the country’s economy. (NewsWire)
