The President of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) Senthil Thondaman has extended his gratitude to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.K. Stalin for offering to lend a helping hand to the Sri Lankan Tamils in the upcountry during the present economic crisis.
Thondaman told NewsWire, that he along with a CWC delegation that consisted of party General Secretary Jeewan Thondaman and member S. Rameshwaran had met with Stalin in India a month ago.
During the discussions, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had been briefed on the various difficulties faced by the Sri Lankan Tamils in the estate sector.
The CWC delegation had also requested Chief Minister Stalin to support the Sri Lankan Tamils in the estate sector, similar to those in the North and East.
Indian media reported today that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has proposed to lend a helping hand to Tamils in Sri Lanka, in the light of the present economic crisis in the country.
According to the report, Stalin on Thursday spoke to the Indian Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar over the phone, reiterating the Tamil Nadu government’s proposal to lend a helping hand to Tamils in Sri Lanka in the North, east, and hill country.
Commenting on the development, CWC President Senthil Thondaman said he is grateful to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister for heeding their requests.
Thondaman said the current economic crisis has severely affected the livelihoods of the Tamils in the estate sector as tea manufacturing has been affected due to the lengthy power cuts and the lack of diesel to transport goods.
Stating that the timely assistance of the Tamil Nadu Government is much appreciated, Thondaman said as the President of the CWC he extends his gratitude to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
Thondaman further said he appreciates the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s recognition of the Tamils in the hill country during this crisis.
He further called on the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to further extend support to the Tamils in the estate sector and assist in bringing them out of this present economic crisis. (NewsWire)
