Sri Lanka defence authorities provide update on Easter attacks investigation

A special media briefing was held today to reveal the progress of the investigation into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. 

Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary, General (Retired) Kamal Gunaratne, and Police Spokesman Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Ajith Rohana addressed the press briefing. 

General (Retired) Kamal Gunaratne said 196 persons among 735 individuals who were arrested over the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks are still in remand custody. 

The Defence Secretary said 27 cases have been filed against 79 of them under 25,653 charges.

He further said cases have also been filed against 81 individuals while 493 have been released on bail.

General (Retired) Kamal Gunaratne rejected claims that the investigations into the Easter attacks are not being carried out properly.

Meanwhile, SDIG Ajith Rohana said that Rs.365 million worth of assets have been confiscated from suspects linked to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks. 

He further said that Rs.165 million in gold and cash have also been seized from the suspects. (NewsWire)
