PM makes special statement in Parliament

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has acknowledged that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution may be the temporary solution to the national crisis in Sri Lanka. 

He made a statement in this regard in Parliament today, where sessions have recommenced after the April New Year break. 

The Prime Minister said he believes the 19th Amendment to the Constitution must be upheld with certain amendments at this juncture. 

He further said that this must be implemented as a short-term solution to the ongoing crisis in teh country. 

Stating that he is aware of the sufferings of the people, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said everyone must work together to resolve the crises.

The public has been staging peaceful protests over the last 8 days calling on the President and the Prime Minister to resign over the failed economy of Sri Lanka. 

One of the key demands of the public is for the 20th amendment to be repealed, abolish the executive presidency, and reinstate the 19th amendment to the Constitution.
